Observations on the resting sites of Tabanidae in a miombo woodland in the Republic of Zambia

Observations on the use by tabanids of tree tops, branches, trunks, aardvark holes, fallen logs and bushes as resting sites were made in Zambia by trapping the flies on Tanglefoot, a colourless, odourless sticky substance applied to these sites. Collections were made during 2 rainy seasons, from November 1974 to April 1975 and from November 1975 to April 1976. The largest numbers of tabanids were collected from tree tops and bushes, but the greatest variety of species from tree tops and trunks. No tabanids were found resting above 4 m on trunks, branches and tree tops, and no resting tabanids were found in aardvark holes.
