Abstract:

It is shown from investigations with New Jersey box traps (modified Manning traps [see RAE/B 60, 993, etc.]) on Assateague I., Maryland, in June-September 1975, that a dense wall of tall bushes and reed grass that separates the saltmarsh breeding grounds of Tabanus nigrovittatus Macq. from recreational seashore areas (where the tabanid attacks man) is an effective fly barrier [see 64, 1804]. Gaps in the vegetative barrier are travel routes for the tabanids, and traps placed in or near them attracted many of the flies moving through.
