| Abstract: | Routine trapping of tabanids from 4 selected areas in Maryland in 1973 yielded 20 068 females and 21 males. There were 1963 females of Chrysops of 20 species, 8397 of Tabanus of 20 species and 9708 of Hybomitra of 6 species. One of the sites, which was on a farm, yielded 84.1% of the total catch and was the only one where tabanids occurred in sufficient numbers to be a serious source of annoyance to livestock. The main species here were H. lasiophthalma (Macq.) (of which 9625 females were taken) and T. quinquevittatus Wied. (5626 females). |
