| Abstract: | In this fifth part of a series [cf. RAE/B 63, 2037, etc.], an account is given of the collection of tabanids in April-September 1972 for a second consecutive year from Huntsville State Park and the Navasota River Bottoms in Texas [cf. 63, 2037, etc.]. Catches in Manitoba traps and overhead collections from sites common to both years indicated that populations of most species at Huntsville Park were much less numerous in 1972 than in 1971, but that the faunas were similar qualitatively in both years. Seven of the species taken were found in only 1 of the 2 years at Huntsville and 8 of the species at Navasota; catches of these species were very small. Species taken in 1972 comprised 10 of Chrysops, 1 of Chlorotabanus, 1 of Leucotabanus and 14 of Tabanus at Huntsville and 3 of Chrysops, 1 of Whitneyomyia, 1 of Leucotabanus, 13 of Tabanus and 1 of Hybomitra at Navasota. The most abundant species in both years were T. lineola F., C. pikei Whitney, T. petiolatus Hine and C. callidus O.-S. at Huntsville and T. fuscicostatus Hine, T. subsimilis Bellardi, T. proximus Wlk. and T. trimaculatus P. de B. at Navasota. C. brimleyi Hine and C. separatus Hine were found for the first time in Texas. |
