Ovarian studies of Tabanus quinquevittatus (Diptera: Tabanidae)

Tabanus quinquevittatus Wied. was collected in canopy traps near Ithaca, New York, in 1972 and 1973; 807 females were trapped, and 699 were dissected to determine parity. Of these, 277 flies were parous; 54.2% of the parous females showed sac-like dilatations and 45.8% had ’yellow bodies.’ The paucity the number of gonotrophic suggested that the females are short-lived; however, it seems that the number of distinct ’yellow bodies’ is an unreliable basis for determining the number of gonotropic cycles. The abundance of nulliparous females with terminal follicles in stage II suggested that the population studied was anautogenous.
