Abstract:

Seasonal changes in the physiological-age structure of populations of 15 species of host-seeking female Tabanids were examined during 1972 in a woodlot in Haldimand County, Ontario. The number of nulliparous, uniparous and biparous females changed as the flight season progressed. The rate of increase in the proportion of parous females was significantly greater in one group of species than in another. It is suggested that the difference is due to the capacity of certain species (Chrysops cincticornis Wlk., C. cuclux Whitney, Hybomitra lasiophthalma (Macq.) and Tabanus quinquevittatus Wied.) for facultative autogeny. Autogeny is suspected in C. niger Macq.
