Abstract:

Tabanus lineola lineola F. was found to oviposit near the upland in New Jersey on the tips of the salt marsh grasses (mainly Spartina alterniflora). The egg-masses contained an average of 208 eggs. The larvae were spindle-shaped and vermiform, and were about 2 mm in length at hatching and 20-24 mm just before pupation. There were 8-10 instars, males averaging one fewer moult than the females. The pupa was 11-19 mm long, and the adult emerged from it in 7-16 days. The adults in captivity lived for an average of 16 days. Frequently, Telenomus emersoni (Gir.), a parasite, and Naemia seriata (Melsh.), a Coccinellid predator, attacked the egg-masses in the salt marsh.
