| Abstract: | Tabanids were collected weekly from March to October 1972 with 8 modified Manitoba traps and 3 modified animal traps [cf. RAE/B 57, 721] at five sites in the swampy south-eastern part of the Pine Belt of eastern Texas known as the Big Thicket. The catch comprised 6582 females and 3 males of 29 species, of which 6 were in the genus Chrysops, 18 in Tabanus, 2 in Hybomitra and 1 each in Diachlorus, Whitneyomyia and Leucotabanus. T. fuscicostatus Hine, T. lineola F., C. flavidus Wied., H. lasiophthalma (Macq.), T. subsimilis Bellardi, T. proximus Wlk. and T. sulcifrons Macq. were among the 8 most abundant species at the 2 sites that yielded 98.5% of the catch. |
