Abstract:

Collections of Tabanids were made weekly from April to September 1971 with modified Manitoba traps and aerial insect nets used overhead in the rolling hill country of the Pine Belt of eastern Texas [cf. preceding and next abstracts]. The catch of 1469 females included representatives of 10 species of Chrysops, 1 of Chlorotabanus, 1 of Leucotabanus, 14 of Tabanus and 1 of Hybomitra. Chrysops callidus O.-S., T. petiolatus Hine (melanocerus petiolatus), C. pikei Whitney, T. lineola F., T. trimaculatus P. de B. and T. subsimilis Bellardi made up 32, 14, 13, 12, 5 and 4% of the catch, respectively. A pasture clearing in an upland pine forest yielded 25 of the 27 species represented. Three species of Chrysops constituted new State records.
