Seasonal activity and abundance of biting flies (Tabanidae) and mosquitos (Culicidae) at the River Isar south of Munich

Abundance and seasonal occurrence of Tabanid biting flies and Culicid mosquitoes have been monitored from the summers of 1997 to 2005 in the riverine forests along the river Isar South of Munich, Bavaria. All species in general are comparatively uncommon except mosquitoes after early floods, which create temporal waters suitable for breeding. Late floods in August are of no importance, however. Haematopota ph/via/is is by far the most abundant Tabanid biting fly, but the normally more alpine Hybomitra aterrima occurred also during the extremely hot early summer of 2003. The figs. give the results on seasonal occurrence and changes in abundance over the study period in this quite natural section of the river Isar.
