| Abstract: | The insects belonging to the family of Tabanidae known as horse flies, are at larval stage aquatic or semiaquatic and predaceous. But the females are blood sucking and are often serious pests of livestock and human. In addition, some of them are known to be the vectors of diseases like Anthrax and Tularemia to human. The males feed chiefly on pollen and nectar of flowers. During 2001-2003, a faunistic survey on horse flies of north parts of Khorasan province (N.E. Iran) was carried out. As a result, 8 species are recorded, of which 3 are new for the Khorasan province. This brings the total number of horse flies recorded from the province of Khorasan to 17. Clearly, more species are to be expected after more intensively collecting. |
