| Abstract: | Aegialomyia, Brachytabanus, Melanotabanus and Stenochlorops are restored to subgenera of Stenotabanus. An annotated key to the 7 subgenera of Stenotabanus is presented, as are descriptions and keys to South American species in subgenera Cretotabanus, Stenochlorops and Stenotabanus. Notes on the identity of some species in subgenera Aegialomyia and Melanotabanus are also provided. New species include S. henriquesi Chainey, sp. nov. (from Roraima, Brazil), of the subgenus Stenochlorops and 8 species of the subgenus Stenotabanus: S. albiscutellatus Chainey, sp. nov. (from Peru); S. braziliensis Chainey & Gorayeb, sp. nov. (from Rondonia, Brazil); S. cipoensis Chainey, sp. nov. (from Minas Gerais, Brazil); S. hyalinalis Chainey, Hall & Gorayeb, sp. nov. (from Bolivia, and Mato Grosso, Brazil); S. irregularis Chainey & Hall, sp. nov. (from Argentina and Bolivia); S. nigriscapus Chainey & Hall, sp. nov. (from Bolivia and Peru); S. penai Chainey, sp. nov. (from Peru); S. wilkersoni Chainey, sp. nov. (from Colombia). Eight new junior synyonyms are proposed: Stenotabanus fumipennis syn. nov. = S. albidocinctus; S. liokylon syn. nov. = S. albidocinctus; S. obscuremarginatus syn. nov. = S. albidocinctus; S. pallidicornis syn. nov. = S. peruviensis; S. pallipes syn. nov. = S. taeniotes; S. pseudotaeniotes syn. nov. = S. taeniotes; S. quinquestriatus syn. nov. = Dasybasis missionum; S. stigma syn. nov. = S. albidocinctus. Stenotabanus maculifrons is removed from synonymy with S. incipiens. Stenotabanus bruesi and S. littoralis are transferred to the subgenus Aegialomyia, S. brunnipes to thesubgenus Melanotabanus and S. trilunatus to the subgenus Cretotabanus. New combinations include Stypommisa brunneus comb. nov. and Stypommisa macroceras comb. nov. Neotypes are designated for Stenotabanus pallidicornis and S. peruviensis. |
