Abstract:

Two synapomorphies (gonostyle and mushroom-like expansions on spermathecal ducts) support the monophyly of the subfamily Tabaninae. Analysis of tribe-specific features, using the Tytan 87 and Henning 86 computer programmes revealed that the most likely phylogeny includes Lepidoselagini as the ancestral group, with Tabanini (including Diachlorini), Haematopotini and Heptatomini derived from them as 3 independent branches.
