| Abstract: | This book provides a fully comprehensive introduction to the insects and other arthropods which affect human health. The emphasis is on the systematic aspects of medical entomology, i.e. the diagnostic features and biology of each medically-related group and how the important families, genera and species can most easily be identified. Each chapter also reviews the diseases concerned and provides an outline of vector control. There are ca. 650 line drawings, 50 photographs (including SEMs) and 20 disease/vector distribution maps. After an introduction (R.P. Lane & R.W. Crosskey), the chapters cover: Phlebotominae (R.P. Lane); Culicidae (M.W. Service); Simuliidae (R.W. Crosskey); Ceratopogonidae (J. Boorman); Tabanidae (J.E. Chainey); Glossinidae (A.M. Jordan); Muscidae and Calliphoridae (R.W. Crosskey & R.P. Lane); myiasis in man (M.J.R. Hall & K.G.V. Smith); Blattaria (N.R.H. Burgess); haematophagous Hemiptera (C.J. Schofield & W.R. Dolling); Anoplura (J. Ibarra); Siphonaptera (R.E. Lewis); insects of minor medical importance (K.G.V. Smith); ticks and mites (Acari) (M.R.G. Varma); Araneae and Scorpiones (J.L. Cloudsley-Thompson). |
