| Abstract: | A survey of the biting flies of Point Clear Island surrounding tidal marshes revealed the presence of 26 species within the families Ceratopogonidae, Culicidae and Tabanidae. Of the 6 species of biting midges found, Culicoides furens, C. mississippiensis and Atrichopogon fusculus were the most abundant. Aedes sollicitans and A. taeniorhynchus were the only mosquitoes of the 11 species collected that were abundant. Chrysops atlanticus was the most abundant deerfly, and Tabanus acutus, T. lineola hinellus and T. nigrovittatus were common horseflies in the area. Five additional species of tabanids were encountered. |
