| Abstract: | At present, 650 species of tabanids belonging to 221 genera are known from the Oriental region, out of which only 273 species belonging to 19 genera and 7 tribes are known from the Indian subcontinent (India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal). A zoogeographical analysis showed that the subfamily Tabaninae is dominant, followed by the Chrysopsinae and Pangoninae. The Oriental faunal element is the largest, while the Palaearctic and Africotropical elements are quite low. The number of the ’precinctive’ species is quite varied in different countries of the Indian subcontinent. Only 83 species of the Indian subcontinent are widely distributed in the Oriental region, out of which 6 are found in other zoogeographical regions of the world. |
