| Abstract: | Of the >50 000 tabanids caught with Malaise traps in French Guiana between 1979 and 1984, the most important were, in decreasing order of abundance, Tabanus importunus, T. occidentalis var. dorsovittatus, Phaeotabanus cajennensis, Cryptotylus unicolor and T. wilkersoni. These species comprised 90% of the total sample. The crepuscular species, C. unicolor, Chlorotabanus mexicanus and C. inanis, were caught efficiently only in traps baited with carbon dioxide. The economic importance of the species is discussed with regard to their size, abundance, behaviour and ecology. Taking these factors into account, the most noxious tabanids were T. importunus, Cryptotylus unicolor and T. occidentalis var. dorsovittatus. |
