| Abstract: | The author reviews the problems caused to grazing cattle in Europe by Diptera. Included are Haematobia irritans, H. stimulans [Haematobosca stimulans], Musca autumnalis, M. domestica, Stomoxys calcitrans and species of Hydrotaea, Morellia, Tabanus, Hybomitra, Haematopota, Muscina, Fannia and Chrysops. Information is given on the behaviour of these species, the economic damage they cause, their veterinary importance and their control. The main methods of insecticidal control are listed, including sprays, ear tags and pour-on formulations, as are the main insecticides used, which include permethrin, cyhalothrin, cypermethrin, fenvalerate, tetrachlorvinphos, flucythrinate, cyfluthrin and deltamethrin. |
