| Abstract: | The basic concepts which affect the relationship between biting flies and their livestock hosts are discussed, particularly with regard to models based on injury thresholds and economic injury levels based on ecological parameters and population dynamics. Specific details of host-parasite relationships (especially host resistance) are given for various Simuliidae, Tabanidae, Ceratopogonidae, Oestridae, Hippoboscidae, Muscidae and Culicidae and their effects on cattle and reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) in Canada. The influence of a fly species on host productivity was modified significantly by its interactions with other species of the same complex which frequented the same host. |
