Range of attractiveness of carbon dioxide to Hybomitra spp. (Diptera: Tabanidae).

Abstract:

The attractiveness of carbon dioxide to Hybomitra species was tested in the field in Ontario between May and August 1986. Twenty visually unattractive ramp traps were placed 3-19 m away from a central source of carbon dioxide, released at a rate of 1000 ml/min (i.e. comparable to that released by cattle). Females of H. epistates, H. nuda and H. lasiophthalma were caught in large numbers (165). Numbers caught at 3 m were greater than at any other distance (147). Only 3 females were caught at 19 m, and only 2 females when no carbon dioxide was released. The results are discussed with regard to the host seeking behaviour of Tabanidae.
