| Abstract: | Based on studies in Japan, 2 species and a new subspecies of Stonemyia are recognized in the country. The 2 species are S. yezoensis and S. enokizonoi; the latter was considered a synonym of S. yezoensis by H. Takahashi (1977), but is treated in this work as a valid species on the basis of morphological, ecological and behavioural characteristics. S. enokizonoi enokizonoi from Yakushima is distinguished from S. enokizonoi ishizuchiensis subsp.n. from Shikoku. A key to the males and females of the 3 taxa is presented, and a map showing distribution records in Japan is given. Observations on habitats, seasonal abundance, daily activity and flower visiting are noted. |
