Oviposition behavior of Chrysops atlanticus (Diptera: Tabanidae)

Observations carried out in a salt marsh in New Jersey on the ovipositon behaviour of Chrysops atlanticus showed that the females oviposited exclusively during the early evening. Though eggs were laid primarily on Spartina alterniflora, which was the dominant species in the wet depressions preferred for oviposition, eggs were also found on S. patens and Distichlis spicata in similar localities, and it appears that the females may have been responding to the stimulus of the wet depressions rather than to that of a particular plant species.
