| Abstract: | Comparison between the mouthparts and associated sensilla of males and females of Tabanus nigrovittatus Macq. collected from the field in Massachusetts, USA, showed a distinct sexual dimorphism in most but not all of the structures relating to the feeding habits of the 2 sexes, especially the absence or reduced number of certain structures in the male, which does not feed on blood. In both sexes, sensilla were found on all the mouthparts except the hypopharynx and maxillary lacinia. The presence of 2 campaniform sensilla on each mandible of the female and of pseudotracheal connectors on the labium of both sexes is recorded for the 1st time on the mouthparts of tabanids. |
