Destination of the meal and the effect of a previous sugar or blood meal on subsequent feeding behavior in female Tabanus nigrovittatus (Diptera: Tabanidae)

In females of Tabanus nigrovittatus Macq. studied in the laboratory in Massachusetts, the crop was the main destination for 1 M sucrose, whereas water alone or blood ingested from a restrained rat at room temperature was directed to the mid-gut. These results confirm previous reports for field-collected females and for other Diptera. Satiation from a previous meal did not inhibit immediate responses to stimuli associated with a different food substance. When 2 meals were taken, regardless of the sequence, the total amount ingested remained the same.
