Abstract:

The authors deal with the species of Tabanidae found in Illinois. The current state of knowledge on tabanid species in central USA is summarised, and keys for their identification and the distribution of the Illinois species are given. There are sections on the natural divisions of Illinois, the natural history of tabanids (including the immature stages, adult habits, natural enemies and economic importance), collection and preservation, classification, taxonomic characters and taxonomic treatment. There is a species index.
