The horse-fly populations (Diptera; Tabanidae) of a forest in the Laurentians: faunal list, phenology, activity and habitats

In 1975 and 1976 a survey was carried out of the tabanid populations in a forest in the Laurentians, Canada. Four habitats were sampled: closed forest and 3 open areas separately near a stream, a beaver pond and a bog lake. The species collected are listed, and comprised 18 species of Chrysops, 1 of Stonemyia, 16 of Hybomitra and 2 of Tabanus. T. fulvicallus Philip was recorded for the first time in Quebec. The bulk of the material (78%) was collected in canopy traps, with Chrysops and Hybomitra equally represented. Hand-net and Malaise trap collections mostly comprised species of Chrysops. In 1976, the period of adult activity extended from 29 May to 17 September with a distinct maximum between 11 June and 6 July. There was a succession of species during the summer.
