Nonreplication of Jamestown Canyon and Keystone (California group) viruses in tabanids (Diptera: Tabanidae)

Abstract:

Tabanus nigrovittatus Macq., Chrysops fuliginosus Wied. C. obsoletus Wied. and C. atlanticus Pechuman were examined in Connecticut for susceptibility to parenteral infection with Jamestown Canyon and Keystone viruses. T. nigrovittatus was also tested for its ability to become orally infected with these viruses. No evidence of virus infection and replication was detected by immunofluorescence or virus isolation in any of the flies tested. An improved technique for inducing T. nigrovittatus to engorge on blood under laboratory conditions (including feeding through a membrane) is described.
