Abstract:

This monograph on the Tabanidae of California begins with an introductory section in which the behaviour and biology of adults and immatures stages are reviewed and notes are provided on the collecting, rearing and morphology of the larval and pupal stages; keys down to generic level are provided, for adults, larvae and pupae. There follows a systematic treatment of the species in 12 genera representing 3 subfamilies. Keys to species are provided, and the accounts of individual species include information on their geographical range, distribution in California, seasonal occurrence and biology (including biting activity where relevant and known).
