Annotated list of Tabanidae (Diptera) of Senegal and the Gambia

Tabanids trapped in Senegal and the Gambia during a series of investigations on potential vectors of arboviruses are listed, together with other species recorded in the literature; the total number of species and subspecies now known for these countries is 43, of which 7 species (including Ancala necopina (Aust.), Tabanus simpsoni Aust., T. thoracinus P. de B., Haematopota bullatifrons Aust. and H. lacessens Aust. (the only species caught in the Gambia)) were recorded for the first time from these countries. Geographical distribution records are given, and also notes on seasonal distribution. Most species were caught from June to November, a month after the beginning and end of the rainy season in eastern Senegal, but in the east H. bullatifrons was found only in July and August, and in the north Atylotus agrestis (Wied.) was present in large numbers in the dry season, from November to January.
