Abstract:

The effect of temperature on oogenesis and embryonic development in 14 species of Tabanidae was studied in Mississippi by collecting engorged females from a bait animal and keeping them at temperatures from 15.5 to 32.2 deg C. No oviposition occurred at 15.5 deg C, 9 species oviposited at 18.3 deg C and 11 species oviposited at 35 deg C, and the interval between blood-meal and oviposition decreased with increasing temperature. The optimum temperature range for embryonic development was found to be 21.1-29.4 deg C. Regression equations of the effect of temperature on the preoviposition and incubation periods are presented.
