Identity of Hybomitra typhus and description of a new species previously confused with it (Diptera: Tabanidae)

Further investigations are reported on two tabanids, formerly considered conspecific, from investigations on a mixed population in Ontario [see RAE/B 65, 1402]. The name Hybomitra typhus (Whitney) is retained for the less common and widespread form, and H. pechumani sp.n. is proposed for the common species that is widespread in North America. Descriptions of the adults are provided for both species, and of the larva and pupa for H. typhus (the larva and pupa of H. pechumani have previously been described under the name of H. typhus). Adult and larval characters for separating the two species are given, and differences in the flight periods are reported. Their distribution in Canada and the USA is mapped.
