Attractancy of two black decoys and CO2 to tabanids (Diptera: Tabanidae)

Abstract:

In comparative studies in Mississippi in 1970-72, a spherical black decoy 9 in. in diameter and a doughnut-shaped black decoy made from 4 stove-pipe elbows 6 in. in diameter were generally equally attractive to tabanids when used as baits in Malaise traps. Of 11, 12 and 18 species collected in 3 series of tests, 6, 5 and 9, respectively, were taken in sufficient numbers for statistical analysis, and these are listed. Three species did not respond to either decoy. The combination of carbon dioxide and a black decoy did not increase the numbers of tabanids collected, as compared with carbon dioxide alone. It is suggested, therefore, that black objects and carbon dioxide attract the same populations.
