| Abstract: | A list is provided of 57 species of tabanids that have been taken in maritime Canada, including 31 that were collected in 1973-76 in the Maritime Provinces, especially the border region of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, together with notes on the numbers taken on man or cattle and in barns, traps or trucks, and on the seasonal succession and abundance of about 20 species in the Tantramar Marshes in 1974. Fifteen species were collected feeding on man and 9 on cattle. Generally, species of Chrysops were more annoying to man and Hybomitra on cattle. Keys are provided to the genera represented (Stonemyia, Chrysops, Haematopota, Atylotus, Hybomitra and Tabanus) and to the species in these genera (except for Haematopota, which is known from only one species, and was not taken in the present study). |
